Rotary Club of Kampala Ssese Islands

What is Rotary?

Rotary is an international service organization whose main purpose is to serve others, promote integrity, and advance goodwill and peace around the world.  Rotary was founded in 1905 in Chicago, USA by Paul Harris. Rotary International is the head office for Rotary and it is headquartered in Evanston, USA.  Rotary is made up of more than 36,000 Rotary Clubs in over 200 countries and geographical locations. The members of these autonomous clubs are called Rotarians and they form a global network of more than 1.2 million business and professional leaders, all volunteering their time, talent and other resources to serve their communities and the world.  Rotary is a non-political and non-sectarian organization. Rotary motto is Service Above Self.

In order to carry out its service programs, Rotary is structured in 3 levels: – Rotary International, Rotary District and Rotary Clubs.  A Rotary Club is the basic unit of Rotary activity. Rotarians are members of their club. The president is the leader of the club. Each club elects its president, and together with his officers serve for one-year term. The governing body of the club is the Club Board. Clubs meet once a week, usually for 1 hour for fellowship.

Uganda and Tanzania belong to Rotary District 9213. The total number of Rotary Clubs in the district is 93, with a number of 3000 Rotarians.
